This July, FLING Physical Theatre premieres FAILURE, a bold new contemporary performance work developed in partnership with renowned Australian physical theatre company Legs On The Wall.
Combining aerial dance and contemporary physical theatre, FAILURE explores the emotional and physical terrain of risk, expectation and the fear of getting it wrong. Performed by a professional cast of emerging dance artists, the work examines failure not as weakness, but as a powerful creative force, exposing vulnerability, resilience and humour in instability.
Ambitious, visceral and deeply human, FAILURE signals a significant artistic step forward for FLING Physical Theatre, championing fearless regional contemporary performance and the next generation of Australian artists. FAILURE is a pilot project for FLING, with goals to develop a professional dance company with employment for performing artists right here in the Bega Valley, NSW. If successful, this will be one of a kind in regional NSW and offer pathways to employment for local talent who would traditionally leave the region for metro opportunities.
FLING partnered with Legs On The Wall for this project, under their guidance the performers undertook advanced physical training in aerial skills pushing the limits of trust, endurance and control. The result is a high-intensity, visually arresting performance that moves between raw athleticism and quiet human fragility.
“What’s been most exciting is watching these performers embrace uncertainty rather than avoid it,” says Creative Director Beth Lane. “They’ve been asked to push themselves physically and creatively in completely new ways, developing a work that is both deeply courageous and incredibly honest.”
FAILURE also marks a significant milestone in FLING’s artistic evolution.
“FAILURE signals a confident new chapter for FLING,” says Executive Director Gabrielle Rose. “The scale of the collaboration, the physical ambition of the work and the calibre of artists involved have pushed the company into exciting new creative territory.”
At a time when perfection is increasingly performed and failure is often hidden, FAILURE asks what happens when we stop viewing defeat as a deficit and begin to embrace uncertainty. Through daring movement, immersive staging and emotionally charged performance, the work invites audiences into an intimate encounter with risk, perseverance and what it means to keep going when things don’t go to plan.
Presented in an intimate limited-capacity season in the Bega Valley, FAILURE offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience ambitious contemporary performance emerging from regional Australia.
FAILURE will be presented July 17- 25 at FLING Studio. Tickets are on sale now via flingphysicaltheatre.com.au
