Wakakirri recently announced the winners of the inaugural Wakakirri Dance Schools Challenge. The challenge marks the beginning of a new venture for the charity Wakakirri, which has run Australia’s biggest performing arts challenge for primary and secondary schools for 26 years.
The ultimate event for those who take their Story Dancing seriously, the Wakakirri Dance Schools Challenge was created for dance schools and community groups who love the Story Dance format from Wakakirri’s school challenges.
Dance schools from around Victoria battled it out by presenting their own Story Dance productions – 3-7 minute performances using a combination of dance, drama and creative movement to tell a story.
Children’s Talent School took out the $1,000 First Place Prize and won the Story of the Year Award for The Mystery of Hopkin’s College, a compelling Story Dance mystery set in a haunted college – love, friendship, meetings and disputes, everything is under observation.
In Second Place, Showbiz Performing Arts Studio couldn’t stop spreading the infectious joy with Outbreak!, a Story Dance following the outbreak of a dance fever virus at the local hospital after a clumsy doctor trips and falls onto a virus-filled injection.
WestEnd Performing Arts won Third Place with Once Upon a Time…a Story Dance production where fairytale legends and modern life collide when a girl discovers a fairytale land frozen in time and must help some familiar characters escape the spell of an Evil Queen.
All runner-ups received packs from Studio 7 Dancewear, and BAM Allstars also won Highly Commended for BAMboozled!, a dance journey between ancient lands led by BAM’s performers of all abilities.
The Wakakirri Dance School Challenge is presented with the support the Victorian Government/Youth Central. The Dance School Challenge was a Victoria-only event in 2018, but plans are underway to expand Australia-wide in the near future.
