Global hit musical & Juliet reimagines Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet by asking: What if Juliet chose her own ending?
Presented by the 2026 graduating class and second-year students of Elder Conservatorium Music Theatre, & Juliet comes to Adelaide University’s Scott Theatre from Thursday, 8 October to Sunday, 11 October.
Instead of dying for Romeo, Juliet chooses to live, embarking on a journey of self-discovery with her friends, new and old. Guided (and sometimes manipulated) by Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway, Juliet navigates love, identity and independence in the production.
Directing the production is Matt Hyde, who brings firsthand experience from the world premiere of & Juliet in London in 2019, where Hyde was Casting Associate at Stuart Burt Casting.
“My goal isn’t to recreate what came before, but to honour the spirit of what made & Juliet such a phenomenon in the first place,” Hyde said. “At its heart, it’s a timeless story that asks a question we can all relate to: if you didn’t like the story you’d been handed, would you have the courage to rewrite it? That’s a powerful idea whether you’re sixteen or sixty.”
The production features a cast of 45 students, more than double the size of the original West End production.
“That brings an incredible energy to the show, but it also means every rehearsal has to be meticulously planned and everyone needs to work together as one company,” Hyde said.
& Juliet is written by Emmy-winning writer David West Read, who also wrote Schitt’s Creek. The musical features a soundtrack of pop hits by Swedish producer Max Martin and Friends, including ‘Since U Been Gone’, ‘I Want It That Way’, and ‘…Baby One More Time’, among many more.
Actor and third-year Bachelor of Music Theatre student Allycia Angeles, who plays Juliet, said audiences can look forward to an incredible performance where they will feel like they are a part of the adventure.
“This show is so spectacular and glamorous. It celebrates so many different aspects of love. It is hard not to be enamoured,” Angeles said. “The show not only empowers the characters on stage, but also empowers the audience. You will either leave this show with a new sense of self or with so much joy in your heart.”
