Footnote New Zealand Dance is seeking contemporary dance artists for a range of upcoming opportunities commencing in 2027. Footnote commissions, creates and tours contemporary dance works that engage deeply with artists, audiences and communities. The company is looking to connect with dancers who are curious, collaborative, versatile and committed to contemporary performance practice. Footnote is seeking artists for a variety of engagements, including permanent full-time company positions and project-based contracts.
The company does prioritise dancers who have lived or trained in Aotearoa New Zealand, but also welcome applications from all artists who are eligible to live and work in New Zealand. Footnote is interested in artists who have experience working within collaborative and creative processes; are adaptable, inquisitive and open to experimentation; demonstrate strong contemporary dance technique and performance presence; bring a commitment and rigour to ongoing artistic development; value connection, exchange and collective practice; and align with Footnote’s vision, mission and values. Footnote will present Big Low Dream, a new contemporary dance work created by Jessie McCall, this September. Big Low Dream is about what we reach for, together, in the dark. McCall looks to dream logic – unruly, queer, ethically imaginative, as a way to hold onto meaning in a time of overlapping crises. Ominous and funny, intimate and sweeping, Big Low Dream is a rehearsal of possible futures — tender, desperate, and rising. Footnote will tour with Big Low Dream throughout New Zealand – Wellington (10 – 12 September), Christchurch (19 September), and Auckland (25 – 26 September). A much-loved tradition in the New Zealand School of Dance (NZSD)’s performance calendar is an annual visit to the Whirinaki Whare Taonga Arts Centre in Upper Hutt (22 – 24 September). This year’s “Spring Experience” again brings the School’s senior classical ballet and contemporary dance students to the stage in four inspiring performances showcasing skill, commitment and artistic growth. The dynamic programme of short works will demonstrate the versatility and professionalism of all three year groups.
