Over two weekends in August, Sydney Dance Company and the Neilson Foundation will be supporting INDance, an independent dance program held in the Neilson Studio at Sydney Dance Company.

INDance provides a platform for independent choreographers and creatives to present their work, with the aim of building capacity, improving access and participation across the sector while reflecting the rich diversity of choreographic voices in contemporary Australia.

Four incredible artists have been chosen for the 2024 INDance program through an expression of interest process and reviewed by an external panel of industry advisors led by Rafael Bonachela – Sarah Aiken, Kristina Chan, Ashleigh Musk and Harrison Ritchie-Jones.

Sydney Dance Company is thrilled to be able to provide production, technical, publicity and marketing support for the artists involved and acknowledges the Neilson Foundation’s visionary investment in this program to enable the growth and development of Australian dancemakers.

After critically acclaimed, sold-out performances in 2022 and 2023, Sydney Dance Company is delighted to invite audiences back to the Neilson Studio for the third INDance program which has now become an firm staple on the Australian dance calendar. INDance will showcase a rich diversity of choreographic ideas which push the boundaries of dance and reflects the current Australian contemporary dance landscape.

Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Rafael Bonachela, said, “I am so excited to be launching the 2024 program of INDance at Sydney Dance Company, generously supported by the Neilson Foundation. This year, we received a record number of outstanding applications of a very high calibre for INDance, highlighting the positive impact that the program has had on the sector by providing a platform for independent artists. Supporting Australian choreographers and creatives is at the heart of Sydney Dance Company’s mission, and it is incredible to see INDance return for its third year.”

Neilson Foundation Trustee, Paris Neilson, said, “The Neilson Foundation is thrilled to continue our commitment to this important program by providing a platform for artists to present compelling and ambitious works. We recognise that performance opportunities like these are vital to ensuring that independent dancemakers can have their works seen by new audiences. The intimacy of the Neilson Studio at Sydney Dance Company enhances the experience of watching bold, diverse and dynamic dance works, and we are proud to partner with Sydney Dance Company to establish this invaluable platform.”
