Brisbane Contemporary Dance Intensive

Expressions Dance Company presents Brisbane Contemporary Dance Intensive

For the first time, Brisbane dancers don’t have to travel interstate for a quality summer school intensive program in contemporary dance.   Expressions Dance Company, under the new artistic director, Natalie Weir has engineered a contemporary dance summer school program as a new initiative as part of their 2010 dance sector development plan.

The program is designed to help young dancers to consolidate their skills in contemporary dance and more experience dancers be mentored by the best in the business.

“As Expressions Dance Company is the only professional contemporary dance company in Brisbane, it makes sense we provide the platform for an intensive learning program in the contemporary form and invite some of the best teachers to join us” Weir says.

The one week full time program is offered at two age groups and levels.   The intermediate level for young dancers between 13 and 17 years focuses on giving a strong grounding in the contemporary movement style.

The advanced level is for aspiring professionals and offers a structured development experience with trainers and artists who are well regarded in the industry including Carol Wellman (ex rehearsal director with Garry Stewart’s Australian Dance Theatre),  Adrian Burnett (well regarded choreographer and teacher) and Lisa Griffiths (acclaimed contemporary dance performer).

Popular Expressions Dance Company members will also teach company repertoire and participate in the teaching program.

In the afternoons everyone will have the opportunity to have some fun with guest teachers brining in their own styles.   “We are delighted to have Raw Dance Company members teaching jazz, So you think you can dance finalist Gianne Abbot sharing her Brazilian dance and Circa trainers brining circus skills into the mix”   Weir says.   “It promises to be  a challenging and rewarding couple of dance which we hope will become an annual event.”
