School students who wish to keep dancing despite the recent cancellation of the Rock Eisteddfod may find some joy in the knowledge that many eisteddfods across the country also cater for dance groups.
McDonald’s Sydney Eisteddfod offers thirty-five such events for groups of all ages in styles ranging from classical ballet to jazz, contemporary and music theatre, hip hop, etc, six of which are reserved for primary and secondary school troupes. While teams from professional dance academies and accredited performing arts schools are excluded from these events, the groups share the same horizons and all winners have a chance to compete in the final $10,000 Dance of the Champions.
While it is reasonable to argue that school teams would be unlikely to shine against students from professional academies, this is not the case. After winning the Primary School Dance Contest last year with a scintillating rendition of Bette Midler’s Boogie Woogie Bugler, a group of girls from Cherrybrook Public School trounced the entire field and claimed first prize!
