It’s official – one of the world’s top ballerinas is set to tour down under in winter 2017. Dusty Button, principal dancer at Boston Ballet, has just been announced as the next Guest Teacher at the prestigious International Ballet Workshops (IBW). This year’s tour will travel to Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Hobart and Auckland this June and July – an incredible opportunity for dance students.

Button trained in New York at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theatre, and on a scholarship at London’s Royal Ballet School. From the former, she graduated with Honours and was awarded the Dame Ninette de Valois bursary. Button joined the Boston Ballet corps de ballet in 2012, was promoted to soloist in 2013 and to principal in 2014. She has also performed with The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Japan’s K Ballet, The Ace Awards, Broadway Underground, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Space Coast Ballet and Ballet Hawaii.

Australian dancers may have become aware of Button due to her Instagram account, which displays her outstanding technical ability and aesthetic, including seemingly-impossible pirouettes. This winter, she’ll be sharing her wisdom and expertise with some very lucky Australian and New Zealand dancers at IBW.

The two- and three-day workshops are open to ballet dancers aged seven and up, with a maximum of only 30 places available in each level (Junior/Intermediate/Senior) in each city.

IBW has been providing unique international connections and opportunities since it started in 2015. Previous teachers have included Jacques Marsa of the Paris Opera Ballet, Béjart Ballet Lausanne ex-soloist Dominique Genevois and Russian ballet experts Anastasia Dunets and Stanislav Belyaevsky. Many dancers have gone on to dance overseas as a result of connections made at the Workshops, including Henriette Hartl, who has gone on to train at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School.

Speaking to Dance Informa last year, Hartl said, “The most valuable thing I took away from my experience at IBW was to trust in others and be your true self … because when you trust in others to see the real you, wonderful things happen! If you are attending International Ballet Workshops this year, not only will you experience highly sought-after teachers from around the world, you may have doors opened for you that you never expected. In my case, it was a perfect match.”

Here’s what others have said about International Ballet Workshops:

“I really enjoyed every minute of this workshop. I felt like it has really improved my confidence, and I would definitely love to do it again!” – Molly, IBW Summer 2015, Gold Coast

“Jessie has just been accepted in Junior section of Ballet Theatre Queensland … So she is very excited!! Both Jessie and I think your summer workshop has boosted her confidence a lot! Thank you!” – Sam, IBW Summer 2017, Gold Coast

“It ran flawlessly from the perspective of a parent, and the quality of the classes are outstanding. Having Tony, an older teacher and male with such vast experience and training, was such a delight for Holly, who two days later is still practicing his ballet routine!” – Vanessa, IBW Summer 2017, Melbourne

“The ‘thank you’ should go to you! Jess loved every minute of her time in your workshops. The first thing she asked me at the end was if she could go to the next one! I can’t thank you enough for bringing these quality workshops to Tasmania. It’s a great way for the dancers to meet other dancers in a warm and friendly atmosphere.” – Rosemary, IBW Summer 2017, Hobart

This Winter’s workshops are set to take things to another level, with the incredible and inspirational Button as Guest Teacher.  It will be the experience of a lifetime for all ballet students.
