New Zealand School of Dance (NZSD) is dedicated to dance through many events open to the public and aspiring dancers.

Pathways: Information on studying at NZSD (held July 2018, Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch), is a series of informal talks for those interested in the pathway to full-time study at NZSD. Director Garry Trinder will provide insights from the School’s perspective and answer questions on what to expect from full-time dance training, the programmes at NZSD, and how to apply and what it takes to get in.

NZSD will host a couple fundraisers, includingFilm Fundraiser: Ella (10 July, 7-8:30pm, Embassy Theatre) and Artist Talk Fundraiser: Abigail Boyle (12 July, 6:15-7:15pm, Te Whaea: NZ Dance and Drama Centre Theatre).  

NZSD will present STOA | Choreographic Season 2018 on 28 June – 7 July, a compilation of 11 short works choreographed by NZSD contemporary dance students. Performances will be held at Te Whaea: NZ Dance and Drama Centre Basement.

In addition, NZSD will hold auditions to study at the School in 2019. Auditions will be held in Wellington (29 September), Sydney (1 October), Melbourne (2 October) and Brisbane (4 October). For more information on all of these events, head to www.nzschoolofdance.ac.nz.

The Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) has appointed three choreographers in residence for 2018-19 – UK-based New Zealander Corey Baker and RNZB company members Loughlan Prior and Shaun James Kelly. They will create a variety of works for the company from main stage productions to smaller-scale works for Tutus on Tour and educational events, as well as a range of events.

RNZB Artistic Director Patricia Barker says, “Our three choreographers in residence are at different stages in their careers, and we are pleased to offer our support, energy, time and resources to help each of them continue along their creative paths.”

RNZB has also announced the four choreographers who will premiere works in the company’s Strength and Grace season this August. The season is a celebration of the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand and RNZB’s 65th birthday. The choreographers are Sarah Foster-Sproull from New Zealand, Danielle Rowe from Australia, Penny Saunders from the U.S. and Andrea Schermoly from South Africa. Strength and Grace will be performed at Wellington’s Opera House on 17 and 18 August.
