The Nutcracker

The acclaimed 22-year-old St Petersburg Ballet Theatre will come to Australia and New Zealand over the Christmas and New Year holidays as part of its upcoming international tour. The company will first tour to Singapore and Macau before arriving in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland for December and January. It will present performances of the world’s most loved ballet, Tchaikovsky’s full-length classic Swan Lake, and of his most enchanting and magical ballet, The Nutcracker.

First performed in St Petersburg in 1895, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake is the classic love story between Prince Siegfried and the Swan Princess Odette, divided by the villainous sorcerer Rothbart. With its spectacular and dramatic ballroom scene, sublime music and deeply moving story, Swan Lake is a ballet that has enthralled audiences for generations.

An adored Christmas tradition around the world, The Nutcracker is testament to Tchaikovsky’s enduring music and the magical power of storytelling. This full-length production brings to life the magical tale of young Clara and her Nutcracker Prince and their fantastical adventures into a world where dreams come to life.

Having previously sold out shows in Paris, London, Singapore and Melbourne, the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre is renowned globally not just for its beautiful Vaganova-trained dancers but also for its grand productions. As a producer with decades of experience in presenting quality Russian ballet in Australia, Andrew Guild said, “The St Petersburg Ballet Theatre is truly traditional Russian classical ballet at its very best. This is the real thing, grand-scale Russian ballet. A complete classical full-length work. If you see only one ballet in your life, let it be this.”
