Sydney Dance Company launches new Youth Term Classes in May

SDC Youth Workshop

On March 22, Sydney Dance Company (SDC) announced a new program of Youth Term Classes for dancers in School Grades 3 to 12, to be held in the prestigious company’s purpose-built dance studios in Walsh Bay, Sydney. Classes are set to commence the first week of May 2016.

Presented as part of the company’s extensive national education operation, the Youth Term Classes provide a unique opportunity for Sydney-based dance students to develop confidence and self-enquiry and celebrate their own individual creativity in a non-competitive environment.

Led by teachers that include awarded Australian dancers Dean Walsh and Kay Armstrong, the eight-week program will cover contemporary dance techniques, improvisation, collaborating in a creative environment and choreographic task work.

Designed to enhance and complement participants’ existing dance class training, the new Youth Term Classes are an introduction to the philosophies underpinning SDC’s Pre-Professional Year program.

Renowned dancer and dance educator Linda Gamblin, course director of the Pre-Professional Year Program, says, “I am excited to welcome the young dancers of our Youth Term Classes and introduce them to the ideas and techniques we practice each day here in Sydney Dance Company’s Pre-Professional Year. Our ambition to explore every aspect of our art form gives growth to exceptional well-rounded dancers and individuals. Technique is just the beginning. By working with the mind and the body, embracing individuality and encouraging uniqueness, the rewards for the participant and the observer are endless.”

Registrations are now open for the inaugural program of Sydney Dance Company Youth Term Classes, commencing the first week of May 2016.

Classes are open for all and will develop and extend any dancer’s current skill level. The program will cater to different age groupings across the week – Grade 3 and 4 students on Monday afternoons; Grade 5 and 6 students on Tuesdays; Grade 7, 8 and 9 students on Wednesdays; and Grades 10, 11 and 12 on Saturday mornings. All weekday classes are 1 hour and 15 minutes, and Saturday morning classes are 1 hour and 30 minutes, with a maximum of 26 dancers in each class.

Costs are $240 per student per term for weekday classes; $285 per student per term for Saturday mornings.
