Award-winning dance production heads to Victorian Dance Festival

An Australian Wartime Story

The award-winning contemporary dance production Yours Truly will head to the Victorian Dance Festival (VDF) in April for a one-off performance at Lighthouse Theatre in Warrnambool. Festivalgoers can see this Australian wartime story set against the backdrop of 1940s rural Australia on Friday, April 15.

“We are so excited to announce that Paul Malek and Kim Adam’s award-winning contemporary dance show Yours Truly will be returning,” wrote Festival Director Kate Meade in an official release.

Premiered in July 2013, Yours Truly explores the heartbreaking stories of three women and three men separated by war. When Dance Informa writer Rebecca Martin reviewed the show in Melbourne, she wrote, “Yours Truly was sublime. From the softly lit stage and the haunting and emotive music to the superbly danced choreography and the heartbreaking story, this was local dance at its finest.”

Dancers Jayden Hicks and Lauree Malek were standouts in the original cast, and VDF attendees will be excited to hear that they’re set to perform in this show in Warrnambool. Other dancers include Kurt Dwyer-Will, Danika Sayce, Lachlan Hall and Rachel Whelan.

The show’s music is by Antony and the Johnsons, a New York-based alternative rock band known for their “cinematic orchestral arrangements and haunting vocals.” Their music really brings viewers into the period of this piece, complementing the heart-wrenching story perfectly.
